A Real TreatInterviewing the Mothers Marilyn Olivares — Thornhill, ON
What an emotional joy it was to bring beautiful smiles to all the children we came in contact with. I interviewed several mothers at the distribution sites and was delighted to learn that their children received childhood immunizations free of charge, even in some of the more remote areas. There are free clinics for check-ups or minor illnesses. The family pays for any medications. Most of the children we saw during our trip appeared healthy, although tooth decay was very prevalent.
One mother of four had lost her husband four months earlier from a snake bite while working in the fields. Two of her children were born at home with the help of a neighbour and two were born in hospital costing about 1,000 pesos (about $20). She did not work but was helped by her husband's parents. She was very emotional throughout the interview because of the loss of her husband. She was overcome with gratitude upon receiving a bedkit which she said would help her family. |
