Another distribution of bedkits for Sleeping Children Around the World [SCAW] has been completed in the Philippines. It all came about because Murray and Margaret Dryden felt it was the right of every child to have a good night's sleep and a chance meeting at a Kiwanis convention many years ago. Murray Dryden met Dr. Juan Torres, Jr. of the Philippines who shared his convictions. The rest is history. Many thousands of Filipino children have benefited from that original meeting.
Many of you understand that a core value of SCAW is that 100% of every donation reaches the child who will most benefit. That value is made a reality by our Overseas Volunteer Organization [OVO] in the Philippines. Their task is huge. The SCAW Core Committee gets quotes for items in the bedkit. Then they order, receive, pack, and store them until distribution time. This year seventeen local groups organized each day’s distribution by selecting the children who would most benefit. They listed the children by name and age and arranged transportation to and from the distribution sites. Then they carefully selected a location and provided assistance and security. There is also a cost to transport the bedkits from storage to the distribution site. All of these costs, estimated to be between three to four dollars per bedkit, are borne by the Philippines OVO. Working together, we guarantee that Sleeping Children Around the World remains the 100% charity and a true work of love. |
