Going to the Philippines

Anthony Ng — Toronto, ON

My favourite SCAW story is seeing where the kids live and how they got to the distribution and seeing their faces light up when they received the bedkits.

It makes me feel fortunate that I’m lucky to have a home to live in, clothes on my back, and food to eat. It also makes me feel not to take things for granted in life.

I personally wanted to attend the Philippines SCAW Distribution Trip so I could give back to these kids and to feel good that I am doing something good for them.

The most terrible part for the children is the volcano eruption and the typhoon that destroyed part of Legazpi, Bicol.

I want to thank Kiwanis International, Toronto Aktion Club, and Loblaws for supporting me on this Philippines SCAW Distribution Trip.

Aktion Clubs

On this year’s Philippines distribution 800 of the bedkits were donated by Aktion Clubs across the United States and Canada. Stuart McCormack of Kiwanis International explains:

Aktion Club is a service club for adults living with a disability with 5000+ members worldwide. Their motto is Service In Aktion. The Aktion Club Service Initiative for SCAW began as a single club BBQ fundraiser by the Aktion Club of Toronto. From there it was adopted as the first Service Initiative with every Aktion Club invited to participate. The goal was to raise $10,000 USD with the Kiwanis International Foundation to match dollar for dollar. The campaign kicked off October 1, 2006 and the funds ($24,000 CDN) were raised in just four months. We are very proud of Anthony and his commitment to travel with SCAW and personally deliver bedkits.
