SCAW's Volunteers Overseas

Kay Easun — Toronto, Ontario

Many volunteers in Canada and overseas spend countless hours to ensure that your donations are put in the arms of a needy child. The Mumbai host Rotary team consists of Shamaldus Parekh and Raj Reshamwala. Shamaldus started working with Murray Dryden in 1982 and became a good friend and trusted guardian of his principles.

The two men work closely with representatives from the over sixty Rotary clubs that share the distribution. They work out bedkit allocation and bedkit contents, and look after the bulk purchasing of items. As well, they plan the itinerary and transportation needs for the travelling volunteers.

Rotary Clubs in India are very involved with at-risk children and families through projects with schools, health clinics, and food and employment programs. Many have adopted a school and provide desks and supplies for the children. Each club wishes to be involved in our project to help their most needy children. The distribution committee of each club searches for these needy children with the aid of the teachers and social workers in the area.

When the bedkit contents are delivered, they are packed into large bags and stored safely until distribution day. Countless hours have been spent by these dedicated Rotarian volunteers before that day arrives. Then they become translators and helpers during the picture-taking process and the giving of the bedkit.

They must also see that the children have a safe way home with their bedkits. One school group walked two kilometers to the site and carried their bags on their heads to go home. Big kids helping little ones with teachers guiding — a unique and heartwarming sight.

When a child receives the bedkit from one of us, the Rotarians often have to carry the bedkit to the child’s group as they are rather heavy. They are always patient and kind with the children and are just as thrilled at doing this for them as we are.

The story starts with you, the donors, but it can only end with a large bundle of joy in the arms of a child thanks to all of SCAW’s volunteers.
