Volunteerism is a major characteristic of Sleeping Children Around the World – by those who put in countless hours in the main office, by those who travel overseas for the distributions and finally by our overseas partners. On our recent trip to Kolkata we were fortunate to partner with the Rotary Club of Dum Dum.
Prior to our arrival the Rotarians had tendered for each of the bedkit items, and taken delivery and assembled the more than 130,000 items into 6,500 bedkits. These were then stored until our arrival and delivered in specific numbers to each of our eleven distribution sites within a three-hour drive of Kolkata, and two overnights at the more distant locations. At each of the distribution sites, a minimum of seventy-five volunteers would prepare the photo locations, help register the pre-selected children, supervise the change into the new clothes, and entertain the children waiting for photos. As the children had often travelled considerable distances and might have to wait for several hours, lunch was provided for each child as well as the volunteers. The cooperative partnership with local citizens from the Rotary Club made the overseas experience more rewarding for each of our team members. More importantly for the children, your $30 bedkit donation was greatly enhanced by:
The Rotary Club of Dum Dum will no doubt provide similar efforts to future SCAW distribution projects. |
