Working for Our Common Goal

Sarah Axelson - Toronto, ON

Many components in Kenya contributed to our successful distribution: Sleeping Children Around the World, the Nairobi Rotary Club, and teachers at the local schools we visited.

Different cultures, upbringings, and religions, but all working toward a common goal. In spite of our perceived differences, we all worked as a team in order to ensure that 4,000 Kenyan children would enjoy a restful night's sleep.

The SCAW team: SCAW has been able to encourage Canadian donors to open their hearts as well as their wallets in support of a worthwhile cause. This allowed our team the opportunity to travel to Kenya in hopes of helping the local children.

Our team of six worked very well together during our day-to-day tasks. SCAW's generous leaders have worked tirelessly to ensure that every dollar donated goes directly to the needy children. SCAW's Canadian donors wish to ensure that children sleep peacefully around the world.

The Rotary Club of Nairobi: Salim, Sylvia, Melinda, Nick, Romy, Amar, as well as countless other Rotary Club members and Rotoractors worked day and night to coordinate the purchase of the bedkits and their transportation, the logistics of field locations, and communication with the schools and teachers. The goal of the Rotary Club is to do work that is honest and will benefit others. Their dedication ensured the SCAW team's safety, while at the same time delivering relief to the children of Kenya. The Rotary Club was made up of many different people who all have different occupations and beliefs, but, like the SCAW team, they are brought together by our common goal.

Local Kenyan teachers: The teachers' dedication to the children, many of whom are orphaned, really radiated during our distributions. Some teachers organized their schools to walk 5 km on a Sunday in order to ensure that the neediest children would receive a bedkit. The teachers truly care for the well-being of the children they teach and they definitely go above and beyond in trying to give them a chance at life.

In reaching our common goal, three groups divided by geography, race, religion, and age, all came together and made it happen. The quest to help children of any background seems to be a universal goal for many organizations and individuals involved in SCAW. At the end of the day, people are just people, no matter where they come from.

Our differences allowed us to come together and contribute each of our unique qualities to ensure a successful field distribution -- a fantastic experience overall and one that has certainly made a difference in the lives of 4,000 Kenyan children.
