Smiles of pure delightJill Adams — Peterborough, ON
Our Overseas VolunteersJill Adams — Peterborough, ON Almost as soon as a year's distribution is finished, preparation for the next must start. A service club, in our case the Rotarians, volunteer to be our partners. Their job is to prepare the bedkits and find children who fit the criteria of SCAW. The bedkits contain what can be bought locally for the $35 donation but must include a mattress, blanket, pillow, pillow case, towel, mosquito net (where appropriate), and one complete set of clothing. These items have to be bid on and delivered, assembled, and be at the various distribution communities each day, in the exact number, one for each child on the list.
The visiting team composed of the team leader and five others have to be met and taken to their residential base. Then transportation must be provided each day of the distributions. The distribution sites can be quite close to home base or a few hours drive away. Lunch is usually provided, plus water, coffee and lots of other treats. A complete accounting must be given to the team leader of all monies spent. Our particular visit was greatly assisted by the Rotarian youth and the Healthy Schools Program of Honduras. All of our team greatly appreciates all this on-site preparation and help. |
