From webmaster at scaw.org Wed May 12 20:49:23 2010 From: webmaster at scaw.org (SCAW Webmaster) Date: Wed, 12 May 2010 20:49:23 -0400 Subject: [SCAW-E-Letter] E-Letter: The Evolution of Sleeping Children Around the World Message-ID: It has been said that "Nothing is constant but change." Murray and Margaret Dryden had a dream of delivering 50 bedkits back in 1970. Last year the one millionth bedkit was distributed. My first distribution was in 1992 and at that point the photo labels were being printed by hand! There wasn't email to communicate with the overseas group and there was a lot more of "flying by the seat of your pants." As donations grew, technology was necessary and welcomed. Computers now print the labels and keep track of whose donation buys a child a bedkit in which country. Pictures are now taken digitally and "downloaded" onto a SCAW computer. No more rolls of film to place in lead-lined bags to protect them from x-rays at the airports. It would be impossible to manage the number of bedkits we now distribute in the way it once was done. I like to think of these changes as evolution rather than revolution. One of the things that is evolving is more forward planning. The need to assure the Legacy Fund going into the future would be adequate to continue funding all the expenses was recognized. Congratulations to the founders of the Pinehurst Club for their efforts. This will assure that SCAW's promise that every donor dollar is spent for the bedkit for a needy and deserving child. I believe that this is part of the evolution and through this initiative the corporate sector is becoming more involved. The other thing that is really impressive is the number of volunteers that are giving of their talents, time, and money. They are still the backbone of the organization. Without their dedication -- whether in the office, travelling to distribute bedkits or "spreading the word" -- SCAW could not be the 100% charity that it is. What a pleasure it is to watch SLEEPING CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD evolve. Thanks to all who have had a part in its success. We can all look forward to a rewarding future.
