[SCAW-E-Letter] Sleeping Children E-Letter for February: The Distribution Committee

As chairman of the Distribution Committee, I am very pleased to have
Roberta and Don Harris, Joan and Richard Hryniw, Linda Webb, Laura
Harper, Dave Dryden, Ken Graham, and Ted Swanston as members. Our
committee monitors and adjusts as necessary anything that has to do
with the process of bedkit distribution.

While doing presentations, I am asked many times about one of the
policies that we monitor: How do we select the countries where we
distribute bedkits. Since SCAW does not have the resources to
distribute bedkits in every country in the world, we have criteria to
define the countries in which we will distribute bedkits.

Statement of Policy:

In order for SCAW to go to a country to distribute bedkits, all of the
following conditions must be met. In addition, when SCAW receives a
request for more bedkits from a country where we currently distribute
bedkits, a request to go to a new country or doing an emergency
distribution after a disaster, the SCAW Board of Directors will make a
decision based on these factors.

*/ SCAW must be able to find a trustworthy Overseas Volunteer
Organization that is willing to follow and work within SCAW

*/ The Country must be safe for SCAW travelling volunteers to travel

*/ The Per Capita Income in the country must be less than $2,000 US
per year, as per the World Bank, world development indicators report
(Section 1.1, size of the economy).
*/ The percentage of the population earning less than $2.00 US per day
must be more than 40%, as per the World Bank, world development
indicators report (Section 2.5 poverty)

As soon as any country does not meet any of the above criteria, the
Board will make a decision on any future distribution. This is
reviewed annually.
