Sleeping Children E-Letter for February, 2009
========================================
This month, we want to tell you about another event that is part of
our "Year of the Millionth Bedkit," a special distribution taking
place in India in July.

Spiti Valley, India
====================================
Due to a bequest from a SCAW donor, in July of this year a team of
SCAW travelling volunteers will be distributing 380 "special" bedkits
to children at the Munsel-Ling School, in Rangrik, northern India.

In the spring of 2007, SCAW received an e-mail from a Canadian,
registered charity based in Vancouver, called Trans Himalayan Aid
Society (TRAS) which has been supporting schools up in the Himalayas
since 1962. One of their current projects is to supply bedding to 380
children at a boarding school in the remote Spiti Valley area of the
Himalayas. One of the members of TRAS is a lady who was actually in
Mussoorie, India when Murray was there distributing bedkits in
1981.Here is their description of the bedding in the school.

"The bedding in the dormitories is meager at best, and filthy. Until
we started a health and hygiene project with the school recently, they
had no concept of washing the bedding, and with the children crammed
into small dormitories, illnesses spread like wildfire. Our
recently-built health clinic is helping to educate the children, keep
them healthy, and separate the sick ones until they are well. The
bedding, as you can imagine, after so many years, is lice-ridden,
stained, and stinking with years of bedwetting and vomit. It
desperately needs replacing."

Sleeping Children has decided to take on this project as part of our
"Year of the Millionth Bedkit" celebrations. As the needs at the
boarding school are different to those of our usual bedkit recipients,
the bedkit to be distributed in Rangrik, will consist of a steel
bedframe (to keep the mattress off the cold, dirt floor), a mattress,
a quilt, a bedsheet, a pillow, and pillow case.

Thanks to all of you for your continued support as we move forward to
reach our next milestone.
